Fire Departments to Install Smoke Alarms

Fire departments in Lowndes County have announced they will begin installation of free smoke alarms Saturday January 15th in an effort to reduce fire losses, injuries and deaths.

Mosses Volunteer Fire Department and Hayneville Volunteer Fire Department will kick off this countywide effort at 9:00 AM Saturday morning at the Mosses Town Hall. Chief Anthony Curry of Mosses and Chief Rickie Newbolt of Hayneville invite local residents to join them in Mosses Saturday for this important event.

Chief Curry explained, “The county has been broken into ten districts. As quickly as installations are completed in Hayneville and Mosses, firefighters and other volunteers will continue the project in northern and southern Lowndes County.”

Smoke alarms were received from FEMA after fire departments volunteered to install the alarms throughout the county. Chief Curry and Chief Newbolt received special train-the-trainer instructions at the National Fire Academy to train volunteers in where to install the alarms.

Special fire safety education material will be given out at each home where alarms are installed. Volunteers will be wearing identification cards issued by the State Fire Marshals Office. Should anyone wish to verify that someone offering them a free smoke alarm installation is working with this project, they may contact the Mosses Town Hall 563-9141. Residents receiving a free alarm will be asked to provide some basic information which will help fire officials track the alarms once they are installed.
