A.J. Beltran, who headed the information technology division of the Alabama Department of Insurance since 1999, passed away Sunday after a lengthy battle with lymphoma. He was 48.

Beltran, a native of Tampa, Fla., came to the Insurance Department after serving as a technology teacher in the Montgomery Public Schools. Prior to that, he worked for several corporations – including IBM – as a systems analyst and engineer.  He held a bachelor’s degree from the University of Tampa and a master’s degree from Troy State University Montgomery.

Since 1998, Beltran also served as an adjunct instructor in the computer and information sciences department at Troy State University Montgomery.

He also previously served as a part-time instructor at the Center for Government and Public Affairs at Auburn University Montgomery.

“A.J. Beltran was a man of the highest integrity; he was a man who loved working for the Insurance Department and considered the people here, especially those in the IT division, as his family,” said Pat Hayslip, who was Beltran’s deputy at the Insurance Department.

“A.J. fought a valiant battle and believed to his last breath that he would return to us in two weeks, but God had a different plan. We will miss him deeply.”

Beltran is survived by a sister, who resides in Florida.  Funeral arrangements are pending.
