At 12:09 AM today the Berry Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire which claimed the lives of two Fayette County residents.

Donald Cook age 52 and Damian Johnson age 8 were killed when fire heavily damaged a mobile home and addition at 724 Red Cook Road in Berry.

David Johnson age 10 and James Mark Sanders were injured in the fire. David Johnson was transferred to Children's Hospital in Bimingham and James Mark Sanders was transported to Fayette Hospital.

Mr. Cook was babysitting the children at the time of the fire. The fire was discovered by Mr. Sanders and the children’s mother, Alecia Johnson. Mr. Sanders was injured while rescuing the older child from the burning home.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by local authorities and the State Fire Marshals Office, however, preliminary indications suggest the fire originated in the area of a fireplace.
