Eighty-eight year old Lizzie Larkins died this morning during a fire at her home in Brighton. The fire at 200 Bessemer Avenue was reported at 6:28 AM.

Ms. Larkins attempted to escape the fire according to neighbors, but was unable to do so due to burglar bars on the doors and windows. Two operable smoke alarms were present in the home according to family members.

The fire originated at a non-vented natural gas space heater located in the den. The heater was reportedly condemned and tagged out of service by Alagasco on November 7, 2000.
