Medicare Supplement Insurance Dos and Don'ts

  • Do decide if you need a medicare supplement policy.
  • Do answer all questions on the application truthfully: and do not sign an application without reading it to ensure it has been properly completed.
  • Do get a receipt with the company's and agent's name, address, telephone numbers and be sure the amount you are paying is the amount shown on receipt.
  • Do ask a friend or relative to be present during the sales interview if you feel uncomfortable, unsure or do not understand policy benefits.
  • Do buy your insurance from an agent you know or an agent who comes recommended by a trusted friend. Do not be misled by advertising or endorsements by celebrities since they are paid to advertise the company's policy and are not insurance experts.
  • Do obtain an outline of coverage and a guide to health insurance for people with medicare. Read the materials carefully and be sure you understand them.
  • Do review the policy carefully when received. If you decide to cancel, return policy to the company or agent using the "free look" provisions of at least thirty (30) days. It is best to use certified mail when returning policy.
  • Don't pay cash! Pay for your insurance with check, money order or bank draft made payable to the company and not the agent.
  • Don't buy more policies than you need. One good comprehensive medicare supplement policy will meet your needs.
  • Don't let agents rush you into purchasing their policy. Take your time and compare outlines of coverage with several companies and agents. It is unlawful for agents to use high pressure tactics or make fraudulent or misleading comparisons.
  • Don't switch or replace your policies unless the new policy has better benefits, better service or a more affordable premium. Please review each policy for maximum benefits limits, pre-existing condition exclusions, and don't expect any refund of premiums from replaced company.
  • Don't accept any medicare supplement policy unless it is guaranteed renewable. Guaranteed renewable means the company cannot refuse to renew the policy unless you do not pay premiums, you misrepresented your health condition on the application or it cancels all policies of that type in the state.
  • Don't wait longer than thirty (30) days to receive your policy; contact the company and obtain the reason for delay in writing. Contact the insurance department if policy is not delivered within sixty (60) days.
  • Don't forget to contact your state insurance department consumer services division if you have any questions or experience any problem caused by the company or agent.
